But will they let it kill their souls? They are blindfolded, taken from their group homes and dumped in a huge, brightly-lit building filled with neverending stairs, bridges and landings.

If we allow ourselves to be fooled into thinking that an evil act is somehow the right thing to do, then we have lost a very important part of ourselves. As a teen, though, it made a real impression, and its message is maybe more relevant now than ever.

So I figured it was high time I read something by this mysterious man. The five must learn to love the machine and let it rule their lives. At first it seems Abigail is more resilient character of those two, but as we soon find out she's even more emotionally compromised than Peter was. We must never allow ourselves to be beasts. I first read the synopsis for this a few years ago and the concept immediately caught my attention.

While it's a little far fetched that Peter comes out of the stairs not only able to resist the temptation to give in to despair, but as a healthier, more well adjusted person, I think that it makes the book better, and provides some germ of hope that not everyone is doomed to be an Oliver, Abigail, or Blossom. This book was crazy. I don't want to give away the story or the ending--let's just say that it turns out that the five characters are in a place no human being should be, for a purpose no human being should be subjected to.

The last line in the book is one of the more frightening ones in literature, right up there with the last line in I am insanely addicted attracted to stories about "the group in peril", when people are thrust into an alien setting absent of any social rules and obligations.

This psychological teen read throws five 16 year old orphans into a weird uninviting alien environment filled only with stairs. Even though they are healthy on the outside they have become mental grotesques, left in a state of being that they no longer have control over.

Taut juvenile fiction novel. They were friends and they loved one another, and their hand-holding was perfectly innocent. I cannot say I liked it--in the sense it is not meant to be liked. I was even more fascinated by the concept that people might refused to be conditioned.
